RESUMO

This article presents the results of anthropological research on cancer among rural teachers occupationally exposed to agrochemicals. The study was carried out in the southeastern region of the province of Cordoba (Argentina), an area characterized by the large-scale production of transgenic crops intensively treated with agricultural pesticides. Regarding the methodology, fieldwork was conducted between 2019 and 2020 and included in-depth interviews with ten teachers, as well as observations of everyday situations in the towns where they live and work. Among the main findings, it was possible to identify a hegemonic narrative that naturalizes the existence of cancer and renders it invisible; despite this, it was possible to document the social suffering it caused among rural teachers. The article concludes that there is a need to bring visibility to these conditions in order to protect the health and wellbeing of this sector of Argentine teaching professionals.


En este artículo se presentan resultados de una investigación antropológica sobre el cáncer entre docentes rurales expuestas ocupacionalmente a agroquímicos. El estudio se desarrolló en la zona sudeste de la provincia de Córdoba (Argentina), caracterizada por la producción a gran escala de cultivos transgénicos tratados de manera intensiva con plaguicidas agrícolas. A nivel metodológico, el trabajo de campo realizado entre 2019 y 2020 incluyó entrevistas en profundidad a diez docentes y observación de situaciones de la vida cotidiana en los poblados donde vivían y trabajaban estas docentes. Se propone como hallazgo principal que existe una narrativa hegemónica que naturaliza e invisibiliza la existencia del cáncer pero que, a pesar de ella, es posible documentar los padecimientos individuales y sociales que esta enfermedad provoca entre las docentes rurales. Se concluye que es necesario visibilizar esos padecimientos para resguardar la salud y la vida de este sector de la docencia argentina.

Agrochemicals are products of advanced technologies that use inorganic pesticides and fertilizers. Widespread use of these compounds has adverse environmental effects, leading to acute and chronic exposure. Globally, scientists are adopting numerous green technologies to ensure a healthy and safe food supply and a livelihood for everyone. Nanotechnologies significantly impact all aspects of human activity, including agriculture, even if synthesizing certain nanomaterials is not environmentally friendly. Numerous nanomaterials may therefore make it easier to create natural insecticides, which are more effective and environmentally friendly. Nanoformulations can improve efficacy, reduce effective doses, and extend shelf life, while controlled-release products can improve the delivery of pesticides. Nanotechnology platforms enhance the bioavailability of conventional pesticides by changing kinetics, mechanisms, and pathways. This allows them to bypass biological and other undesirable resistance mechanisms, increasing their efficacy. The development of nanomaterials is expected to lead to a new generation of pesticides that are more effective and safer for life, humans, and the environment. This article aims to express at how nanopesticides are being used in crop protection now and in the future. This review aims to shed some light on the various impacts of agrochemicals, their benefits, and the function of nanopesticide formulations in agriculture.

O Paraquat é um herbicida não seletivo altamente tóxico, sendo responsável por altas taxas de letalidade acidentais ou provocadas, devido, principalmente, à insuficiência respiratória. Apesar de a intoxicação por via oral ser a principal e mais grave, o contato prolongado com a substância em uma grande área corporal pode gerar uma toxicidade similar e levar ao óbito ­ fato pouco elucidado na literatura. Este é o relato de caso de um homem de 22 anos, que foi admitido em um hospital devido a queixas de mal-estar, náuseas, febre, cefaleia, dor abdominal, diarreia, queimaduras e dispneia. A suspeita diagnóstica inicial foi de hantavirose, leptospirose, dengue e tromboembolismo pulmonar e, posteriormente, foi comprovado intoxicação exógena com agrotóxico por via inalatória e cutânea. Exames de imagem revelaram fibrose pulmonar difusa e ele também apresentou alterações renais, hepáticas e coagulatórias. Como não há antídoto específico, foi empregado tratamento sintomático e suportivo, com uso de carvão ativado, antibióticos, corticoides, antioxidantes e hemodiálise. No entanto, o paciente teve uma piora progressiva do quadro, vindo a óbito devido à síndrome da angústia respiratória aguda e fibrose pulmonar. O Paraquat, embora proibido no Brasil em 2020, continua sendo utilizado de forma ilegal. Além disso, seu substituto, o Diquat, possui toxicidade semelhante. Assim, é fundamental que os profissionais da saúde reconheçam o diagnóstico da intoxicação por tais substâncias e suas diferentes vias de exposição. Também são necessárias novas medidas de fiscalização das substâncias e maior investimento em educação em saúde para evitar exposições acidentais, assim como relatado (AU).


Paraquat is a highly toxic non-selective herbicide and is responsible for high accidental or provoked lethality rates, mainly due to respiratory failure. Although oral poisoning is the primary and most severe, prolonged contact with the substance in a large body area can lead to similar toxicity and death ­ a fact that is little elucidated in the literature. This is the case report of a 22-year-old man admitted to a hospital due to complaints of malaise, nausea, fever, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, burns and dyspnea. The initial diagnostic suspicion was hantaviruses, leptospirosis, dengue and pulmonary thromboembolism, and there was subsequently proven exogenous intoxication with pesticides by inhalation and cutaneous route. Imaging tests revealed diffuse pulmonary fibrosis and he also had renal, hepatic and coagulation alterations. As there is no specific antidote, symptomatic and supportive treatment was performed using activated charcoal, antibiotics, corticosteroids, antioxidants and hemodialysis. However, the patient had a progressive worsening of the condition and died due to acute respiratory distress syndrome and pulmonary fibrosis. Paraquat, although banned in Brazil in 2020, continues to be used illegally. In addition, its substitute, the Diquat, has similar toxicity. Thus, it is essential that health professionals recognize the diagnosis of intoxication by such substances and their different exposure routes. New control measures for these substances and greater investment in health education are also needed to prevent accidental exposure, as reported (AU).

As atividades industriais e de agronegócio, embora necessárias para o desenvolvimento da sociedade, tem causado sérios problemas ambientais devido à eliminação inadequada de seus efluentes, sendo o tratamento destes um dos assuntos mais importantes em relação ao controle de poluição. Os microrganismos podem ser utilizados como biomarcadores de contaminação, portanto, o conhecimento de mecanismos associados à resistência e a capacidade de imobilização e biotransformação de poluentes é um fator importante para a identificação de linhagens adaptadas, que podem ser eficientes no tratamento e na recuperação de áreas contaminadas. O objetivo do presente projeto foi avaliar o perfil de tolerância de patógenos bacterianos de alto risco em saúde única, aos metais pesados (mercúrio, prata, telúrio e arsênio) e ao agrotóxico glifosato; identificando o resistoma associado. A correlação fenótipo-genótipo foi avaliada em isolados de Klebsiella pneumoniae (n= 35), Escherichia coli (n=46), e Salmonella spp. (n=19), determinando a CIM pelo método de microdiluição, e analisando as respectivas sequências genômicas. Entre os isolados de K. pneumoniae, 32 cepas apresentaram CIM elevadas (64- 512µg/mL) para o metal prata, dos quais 20 carregam o operon silPABCRSE responsável por conferir resistência. Uma cepa de K. pneumoniae carregando genes terABCE apresentou uma CIM de 64 µg/mL para telúrio. Seis cepas de E. coli apresentaram uma CIM >32 µg/mL para telúrio, sendo que 3 cepas carregam os genes tehA/B. Outras 6 cepas de E. coli apresentaram CIM para prata de 256-512 µg/mL, mas só duas carregaram genes silPFCE. Duas cepas de Salmonella apresentaram CIM 64-128 µg/mL para telúrio, e carregam genes tehA/B e terABCDEF. Em relação ao arsênio, 24 cepas de E. coli apresentaram uma CIM ≥ 512 µg/mL, e destas, 12 cepas carregam os genes arsRBC. Salmonella spp., que carregam o gene merR apresentaram CIMs de 8-16 µg/mL para mercúrio. Não foi possível correlacionar a presença do operon phnC-P (sugerido como responsável pela tolerância ao glifosato) com CIMs elevadas para este composto. Os resultados obtidos suportam a hipóteses que a exposição de bactérias de origem humana, animal e ambiental, aos metais pesados pode estar contribuindo para a seleção de linhagens tolerantes, sendo que a tolerância à prata mediada pelo operon silPABCRSE em K. pneumoniae foi predominante no grupo clonal CG258, característica com potencial de biomarcador que pode ser utilizado para monitorar o impacto do uso deste metal nas diferentes atividades humanas. Neste trabalho foi possível padronizar a técnica de PCR com os genes do operon sil de interesse


Industrial and agribusiness activities have caused serious environmental problems due to the inadequate disposal of their effluents, the treatment of which being one of the most important issues in relation to pollution control. Microorganisms can be used as biomarkers of contamination, therefore the knowledge of mechanisms associated with resistance and the immobilization and biotransformation capacity of pollutants can be an important factor for the identification of adapted strains, efficient in the treatment and recovery of contaminated areas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tolerance profile of critical priority bacterial pathogens relevant in One Health, to heavy metals (mercury, silver, tellurium, and arsenic) and to the pesticide glyphosate, identifying the associated resistome. The phenotype-genotype correlation was evaluated in antibiotic-resistant isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae (n= 35), Escherichia coli (n= 46), and Salmonella spp. (n= 19), by MIC determination using the microdilution method, and by analysis of their respective genomic sequences. Among the isolates of K. pneumoniae, 32 strains showed elevated MIC (64-512 µg/mL) for silver metal, of which 20 carried the silPABCRSE operon responsible for conferring resistance. A strain of K. pneumoniae carrying terrace genes showed a MIC of 64 µg/mL for tellurium. Six strains of E. coli showed an MIC> 32 µg/mL for tellurium, with 3 strains carrying the Thea/B genes. Other 6 strainsof E. coli showed MIC for silver of 256-512 µg/mL, but only two carried silPFCE genes. Two strains of Salmonella showed MIC 64-128 µg/mL for tellurium and carried the/B and terABCDEF genes. In relation to arsenic, 24 strains of E. coli had a MIC 512 µg/mL, and of these, 12 strains carried the arsRBC genes. Salmonella spp., which carriedthe mer gene, had MICs of 8-16 µg/mL for mercury. It was not possible to correlate thepresence of the phonic-P operon (suggested as responsible for glyphosate tolerance) with elevated MICs for this compound. The silver tolerance mediated by the operon sil was a predominant feature in K. pneumoniae strains belonging to the clonal group CG258, suggesting a intrinsic property that has contributed to the persistence and wide dissemination of CG258 within a One Health context, which could be as a biomarkerto monitor the impact of the use of silver compounds and silver-based biomaterial on different human activities. In this work it was possible to standardize the PCR technique with the genes of the sil operon of interest

Honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies that pollinate California's almond orchards are often exposed to mixtures of agrochemicals. Although agrochemicals applied during almond bloom are typically considered bee-safe when applied alone, their combined effects to honey bees are largely untested. In recent years, beekeepers providing pollination services to California's almond orchards have reported reductions in queen quality during and immediately after bloom, raising concerns that pesticide exposure may be involved. Previous research identified a synergistic effect between the insecticide active ingredient chlorantraniliprole and the fungicide active ingredient propiconazole to lab-reared worker brood, but their effects to developing queens are unknown. To test the individual and combined effects of these pesticides on the survival and emergence of developing queens, we fed worker honey bees in closed queen rearing boxes with pollen artificially contaminated with formulated pesticides containing these active ingredients as well as the spray adjuvant Dyne-Amic, which contains both organosilicone and alkyphenol ethoxylate. The translocation of pesticides from pesticide-treated pollen into the royal jelly secretions of nurse bees was also measured. Despite consistently low levels of all pesticide active ingredients in royal jelly, the survival of queens from pupation to 7 d post-emergence were reduced in queens reared by worker bees fed pollen containing a combination of formulated chlorantraniliprole (Altacor), propiconazole (Tilt), and Dyne-Amic, as well as the toxic standard, diflubenzuron (Dimilin 2L), applied in isolation. These results support recommendations to protect honey bee health by avoiding application of pesticide tank-mixes containing insecticides and adjuvants during almond bloom.

The study aims to identify risks of agrochemicals that impact farmworkers, consumers, and ecology in Vietnamese mango cultivation to enhance safety and friendly production. The study finds out the total numbers of root fertilizers (N-P-K) of the noncooperative and cooperative farmers are similar, approximately 1,400 kg/ha/year higher than those in other countries. Excessive fertilizer usage is a potential threat to soil, water, and air pollution. In addition, the findings indicate that the ecology component is undergoing the most negative impact from excessive agrochemical use in mango farming. The vast majority of agrochemicals in mango cultivation are fungicide and paclobutrazol over 90% of the total number of agrochemicals used in both noncooperative and cooperative farmer groups among the three seasons. Total field EIQ of the cooperative grower category is less than that of the noncooperative grower category. These results show that mango cultivation should consider rejecting the banned active ingredients of glyphosate, paraquat, and carbendazim as well as reducing fungicide and paclobutrazol usage and encouraging cooperative participation to safeguard the environment and human health. Moreover, science information needs to be closely linked and fed back to policy development to boost the management of the awareness of the ecological risks for farmers associated with reducing agrochemical use in mango cultivation.

Introducción: Brasil expandió el mercado de agrotóxicos y Río Grande do Sul se destaca como mayor comercializador desde 2014. La población rural, factores socioeconómicos, ambientales y la exposición a agrotóxicos pueden ocasionar la prematuridad y bajo peso al nacer. Objetivo: Verificar la asociación entre la comercialización de agrotóxicos y la ocurrencia de prematuridad, bajo peso al nacer y factores socioeconómicos. Métodos: Estudio ecológico con 496 municipios del estado do Río Grande do Sul, Brasil, en los años 2017 y 2018. La población fueron los nacidos vivos por residencia materna, notificados en el Sistema de Informaciones Sobre Nacidos Vivos. La comercialización de agrotóxicos fue obtenida del Sistema Integrado de Gestión de Agrotóxicos. Se clasificaron los municipios en cuatro grupos de orden creciente, con base en cuartiles de comercialización. Se realizaron análisis de estadísticas en el programa IBM SPPS versión 21.0, considerando nivel de significancia de 5 por ciento (p 0,05). Conclusión: El consumo de agrotóxicos, la disminución de acceso a educación, servicios de salud y ambientes inseguros de trabajo, pueden contribuir para surgimiento de recién-nacidos prematuros y con bajo peso(AU)


Introduction: Brazil expanded the pesticide market and Rio Grande do Sul stands out as the largest marketing state since 2014. The rural population, socioeconomic and environmental factors, as well as exposure to pesticides can cause prematurity and low weight at birth. Objective: To verify the association between the commercialization of pesticides and the occurrence of prematurity, low weight at birth and socioeconomic factors. Methods: Ecological study carried out, in the years 2017 and 2018, with 496 municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The population was made up of the live births by maternal residence and reported in the Live Births Information System. Information regarding the commercialization of pesticides was obtained from the Integrated System for Pesticide Management. The municipalities were classified into four groups of increasing order, based on marketing quartiles. Statistical analyses were carried out in the program IBM SPPS (version 21.0); considering a significance level of 5 percent (P 0.05). Conclusion: Consumption of pesticides, decrease in access to education and healthcare services, as well as unsafe work settings, can contribute to the occurrence of premature and underweight newborns(AU)

Global concern over widely documented declines in pollinators1-3 has led to the identification of anthropogenic stressors that, individually, are detrimental to bee populations4-7. Synergistic interactions between these stressors could substantially amplify the environmental effect of these stressors and could therefore have important implications for policy decisions that aim to improve the health of pollinators3,8,9. Here, to quantitatively assess the scale of this threat, we conducted a meta-analysis of 356 interaction effect sizes from 90 studies in which bees were exposed to combinations of agrochemicals, nutritional stressors and/or parasites. We found an overall synergistic effect between multiple stressors on bee mortality. Subgroup analysis of bee mortality revealed strong evidence for synergy when bees were exposed to multiple agrochemicals at field-realistic levels, but interactions were not greater than additive expectations when bees were exposed to parasites and/or nutritional stressors. All interactive effects on proxies of fitness, behaviour, parasite load and immune responses were either additive or antagonistic; therefore, the potential mechanisms that drive the observed synergistic interactions for bee mortality remain unclear. Environmental risk assessment schemes that assume additive effects of the risk of agrochemical exposure may underestimate the interactive effect of anthropogenic stressors on bee mortality and will fail to protect the pollinators that provide a key ecosystem service that underpins sustainable agriculture.

Diseases of the genitourinary system are the leading cause of hospital deaths in El Salvador, and chronic kidney disease of unknown origin has been gaining attention as a public health problem among farmers in particular. Epidemiological studies point, in part, to environmental risk factors, which have shifted over time with the deployment of modern agricultural science and ongoing climate change. We examined how diseases of the genitourinary system were situated at several margins of an epidemic in one rural Salvadoran municipality where these environmental and epidemiological changes are occurring, albeit relatively slow. By using this approach to study diseases of the genitourinary system, we illustrate one way in which shifting human/environment entanglements can be experimentally "known" in the context of human diseases associated with them. Our approach offers a unique perspective in thinking with ethnographic data to compliment ongoing epidemiological investigations of kidney disease in El Salvador.

Objective:To identify the knowledge of a rural population about the health implications generated by the abuse of pesticides. Method: qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study. The semi-structured interviews took place from July to August 2017, including 12 rural residents from one of the areas covered by the Basic Health Unit of the municipality of Antônio Carlos. Data were submitted by thematic analysis. Results: it was revealed that the participants know the concept of pesticides, however, have failed to identify the damage generated to health. Another important factor was the disuse of personal protective equipment, as well as the lack of knowledge about possible health-promoting activities. Conclusion: the population has little knowledge of the consequences of using pesticides, using them incorrectly due to need and / or lack of knowledge of alternatives. It is evident the need for health education activities, together with the multidisciplinary team, focused on primary care


Objetivo: Identificar o conhecimento de uma população rural sobre as implicações na saúde geradas pelo uso abusivo de agrotóxicos. Método: estudo qualitativo, exploratório-descritivo. As entrevistas semiestruturadas ocorreram de julho a agosto de 2017, incluindo 12 moradores rurais de uma das áreas de abrangência da Unidade Básica de Saúde do município de Antônio Carlos. Os dados foram submetidos pela análise temática. Resultados: revelou-se que os participantes conhecem o conceito de agrotóxicos, contudo, apresentam falha na identificação dos prejuízos gerados à saúde. Outro fator destacado, consistiu-se no desuso dos equipamentos de proteção individual, da mesma forma, que o desconhecimento das possíveis atividades promotoras da saúde. Conclusão: a população possui pouco conhecimento das consequências da utilização dos agrotóxicos, utilizando-os de maneira incorreta por necessidade e/ou pela falta de conhecimento das alternativas. Evidencia-se, a necessidade de atividades de educação a saúde, em conjunto a equipe multiprofissional, voltadas a atenção primária

Las entrevistas semiestructuradas tuvieron lugar de julio a agosto de 2017, incluidos 12 residentes rurales de una de las áreas cubiertas por la Unidad Básica de Salud del municipio de Antônio Carlos. Los datos fueron presentados por análisis temático. Resultados: se reveló que los participantes conocen el concepto de pesticidas, sin embargo, no han podido identificar el daño generado a la salud. Otro factor importante fue el desuso del equipo de protección personal, así como la falta de conocimiento sobre posibles actividades de promoción de la salud. Conclusión: la población tiene poco conocimiento de las consecuencias del uso de pesticidas, usándolos incorrectamente debido a la necesidad y / o falta de conocimiento de alternativas. Es evidente la necesidad de actividades de educación para la salud, junto con el equipo multidisciplinario, centrado en la atención primaria

Currently the only methods for non-genotoxic carcinogenic hazard assessment accepted by most regulatory authorities are lifetime carcinogenicity studies. However, these involve the use of large numbers of animals and the relevance of their predictive power and results has been scientifically challenged. With increased availability of innovative test methods and enhanced understanding of carcinogenic processes, it is believed that tumour formation can now be better predicted using mechanistic information. A workshop organised by the European Partnership on Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing brought together experts to discuss an alternative, mechanism-based approach for cancer risk assessment of agrochemicals. Data from a toolbox of test methods for detecting modes of action (MOAs) underlying non-genotoxic carcinogenicity are combined with information from subchronic toxicity studies in a weight-of-evidence approach to identify carcinogenic potential of a test substance. The workshop included interactive sessions to discuss the approach using case studies. These showed that fine-tuning is needed, to build confidence in the proposed approach, to ensure scientific correctness, and to address different regulatory needs. This novel approach was considered realistic, and its regulatory acceptance and implementation can be facilitated in the coming years through continued dialogue between all stakeholders and building confidence in alternative approaches.

Introduction: An epidemic of chronic kidney disease (CKD) of devastating consequences has been taking place in El Salvador over the last few decades. In a significant portion of affected subjects, no other common cause of chronic kidney disease is present, such as diabetes and hypertension. This illness is usually called Chronic Kidney Disease from Non-Traditional Causes (CKDnT). Previous studies have shown a high prevalence of exposure to agrochemicals in affected populations, particularly in rural areas. In addition to sustained exposure to agrochemicals, the other leading hypothesis to explain this epidemic is prolonged exposure to high temperatures and dehydration in a context of exhausting agricultural work. Objectives: To assess the possible causal effect of exposure to agrochemicals in the emergence of the CKD epidemic in the adult population of El Salvador. Methods: We conducted a case-control analysis based on the 2015 survey of Chronic Diseases in Adults in El Salvador, a national probabilistic sample that covered 4,817 adults ;20 years old. Those suffering from CKD were considered cases; the rest were managed as controls. Self-reported agrochemical exposures, other risk factors and health conditions were recorded. For binary exposures, the odds ratio (OR) of CKD and CKDnT was estimated. For variables measuring length of exposure, the average valu 8203; 8203;for cases and for controls were compared. In all cases, the corresponding 95 percent confidence intervals were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the association between exposure to agrochemicals and CKD while controlling for potential confounding variables. Results: Regardless of how past exposure to agrochemicals was characterized (e.g., contact with paraquat or aerial fumigation) the OR of both CKD and CKDnT was always greater than 1.0 (range, 1.36 to 3.75). Similarly, the average number of years of exposure was consistently higher for cases than for controls for all continuous variables examined (greater than 2 years in most cases). Conclusions: The results of this study are consistent with previous epidemiologic and toxicological evidence and support the hypothesis that exposure to agrochemicals may be causally implicated in the ongoing CKD epidemics in El Salvador(AU)


Introducción: Durante las últimas décadas, una epidemia de enfermedad renal crónica (ERC) de consecuencias devastadoras ha tenido lugar en El Salvador. Una parte importante de los sujetos afectados, no padece de una causa frecuente para padecer enfermedad renal crónica, tal como como diabetes e hipertensión. En tal caso, suele distinguirse la dolencia mediante el nombre de Enfermedad Renal Crónica de Causas no Tradicionales (ERCnT). Estudios previos muestran una alta prevalencia de exposición a agroquímicos en las poblaciones afectadas, particularmente en las zonas rurales. Además de la exposición sostenida a agroquímicos, la otra hipótesis principal para explicar esta epidemia es la exposición prolongada a altas temperaturas y deshidratación, en un contexto de trabajo agrícola agotador. Objetivos: Evaluar el posible efecto causal de la exposición a agroquímicos en la irrupción de la epidemia de ERC en la población adulta de El Salvador. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio de casos y controles, a partir de la Encuesta de Enfermedades Crónicas no Transmisibles en Adultos en El Salvador, basada en una muestra probabilística nacional que abarcó 4,817 adultos de 20 o más años de edad, concluida en 2015. Fueron considerados casos todos aquellos que padecían ERC; el resto dos restantes participantes se manejaron como controles. Se registraron las exposiciones a agroquímicos, así como a otros factores de riesgo y condiciones de salud según testimonio de los participantes. Para las exposiciones binarias, se estimó la razón de odds (OR) con respecto a padecer ERC y ERCnT. Para las variables que medían la duración de la exposición, se compararon los valores medios para casos y controles. En todos los casos, se calcularon los respectivos intervalos de confianza al 95 por ciento. Se utilizó la regresión logística multivariada para examinar la asociación entre la exposición a agroquímicos y la ERC, controlando las posibles variables confusoras. Resultados: Independientemente de cómo fuera caracterizada la exposición pasada a agroquímicos (por ejemplo, contacto con paraquat o fumigación aérea), el OR de ERC y ERCnT siempre fue mayor que 1.0 (rango, 1.36 a 3.75). Del mismo modo, la media de años de exposición fue consistentemente más alta para los casos que para los controles, para todas las variables continuas examinadas (más de 2 años en la mayoría de los casos). Conclusiones: Los resultados de este estudio son consistentes con la evidencia epidemiológica y toxicológica previa y respaldan la hipótesis de que la exposición a agroquímicos puede estar causalmente implicada en la epidemia de ERC que se registra en El Salvador(AU)

BACKGROUND: Agrochemical pollution of surface waters is a growing global environmental challenge, especially in areas where agriculture is rapidly expanding and intensifying. Agrochemicals might affect schistosomiasis transmission through direct and indirect effects on Schistosoma parasites, their intermediate snail hosts, snail predators, and snail algal resources. We aimed to review and summarise the effects of these agrochemicals on schistosomiasis transmission dynamics. METHODS: We did a systematic review of agrochemical effects on the lifecycle of Schistosoma spp and fitted dose-response models to data regarding the association between components of the lifecycle and agrochemical concentrations. We incorporated these dose-response functions and environmentally relevant concentrations of agrochemicals into a mathematical model to estimate agrochemical effects on schistosomiasis transmission. Dose-response functions were used to estimate individual agrochemical effects on estimates of the agrochemically influenced basic reproduction number, R0, for Schistosoma haematobium. We incorporated time series of environmentally relevant agrochemical concentrations into the model and simulated mass drug administration control efforts in the presence of agrochemicals. FINDINGS: We derived 120 dose-response functions describing the effects of agrochemicals on schistosome lifecycle components. The median estimate of the basic reproduction number under agrochemical-free conditions, was 1·65 (IQR 1·47-1·79). Agrochemical effects on estimates of R0 for S haematobium ranged from a median three-times increase (R0 5·05, IQR 4·06-5·97) to transmission elimination (R0 0). Simulations of transmission dynamics subject to interacting annual mass drug administration and agrochemical pollution yielded a median estimate of 64·82 disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) lost per 100 000 people per year (IQR 62·52-67·68) attributable to atrazine use. In areas where aquatic arthropod predators of intermediate host snails suppress transmission, the insecticides chlorpyrifos (6·82 DALYs lost per 100 000 people per year, IQR 4·13-8·69) and profenofos (103·06 DALYs lost per 100 000 people per year, IQR 89·63-104·90) might also increase the disability burden through their toxic effects on arthropods. INTERPRETATION: Expected environmental concentrations of agrochemicals alter schistosomiasis transmission through direct and indirect effects on intermediate host and parasite densities. As industrial agricultural practices expand in areas where schistosomiasis is endemic, strategies to prevent increases in transmission due to agrochemical pollution should be developed and pursued. Obesity has become a very large concern worldwide, reaching pandemic proportions over the past several decades. Lifestyle factors, such as excess caloric intake and decreased physical activity, together with genetic predispositions, are well-known factors related to obesity. There is accumulating evidence suggesting that exposure to some environmental chemicals during critical windows of development may contribute to the rapid increase in the incidence of obesity. Agrochemicals are a class of chemicals extensively used in agriculture, which have been widely detected in human. There is now considerable evidence linking human exposure to agrochemicals with obesity. This review summarizes human epidemiological evidence and experimental animal studies supporting the association between agrochemical exposure and obesity and outlines possible mechanistic underpinnings for this link.

Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in agricultural population is an increasing issue. This study aims to obtain a prevalence estimate of CKDu in male rice farmers in West Java, Indonesia; and analyze the relationship between CKDu and environmental and occupational factors. The study design was cross-sectional. This study included 354 healthy male farmers in two rice agriculture areas in West Java with different altitudes (low altitude and high-altitude location). This research included blood and urine sampling from the farmers for serum creatinine (SCr) level and proteinuria; questionnaire on demographic information, occupational factors and other risk factors for CKDu. We measured ambient temperature and humidity in both study locations for environmental factors. From SCr level and proteinuria, we categorized the farmers into five stages of CKD; then we distinguished CKDu from CKD if the farmers had stage 1-4 of CKD but without diabetes, hypertension and other traditional causes. Data were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression to get prevalence odd ratios of CKDu and its relationship with environmental and occupational factors, adjusted with other risk factors of CKDu. The overall prevalence of CKD was 24.9% and CKDu was 18.6%. For the environmental factors, farm location (high altitude versus low altitude location) was associated with CKDu (Prevalence Odds Ratio (POR): 2.0; 95% CI: 1.2-3.5). For the occupational factors, although not significant, the risk of CKDu increased with the longer use of insecticide and with the more frequent of insecticide use. We suggested that there was a need to conduct future research to investigate more on the association of those environmental and occupational factors with CKDu.

The rise in the World's food demand in line with the increase of the global population has resulted in calls for more research on the production of sustainable food and sustainable agriculture. A natural biopolymer, chitosan, coupled with nanotechnology could offer a sustainable alternative to the use of conventional agrochemicals towards a safer agriculture industry. Here, we review the potential of chitosan-based agronanochemicals as a sustainable alternative in crop protection against pests, diseases as well as plant growth promoters. Such effort offers better alternatives: (1) the existing agricultural active ingredients can be encapsulated into chitosan nanocarriers for the formation of potent biocides against plant pathogens and pests; (2) the controlled release properties and high bioavailability of the nanoformulations help in minimizing the wastage and leaching of the agrochemicals' active ingredients; (3) the small size, in the nanometer regime, enhances the penetration on the plant cell wall and cuticle, which in turn increases the argochemical uptake; (4) the encapsulation of agrochemicals in chitosan nanocarriers shields the toxic effect of the free agrochemicals on the plant, cells and DNA, thus, minimizing the negative impacts of agrochemical active ingredients on human health and environmental wellness. In addition, this article also briefly reviews the mechanism of action of chitosan against pathogens and the elicitations of plant immunity and defense response activities of chitosan-treated plants.

In OECD guideline 443 - Extended One Generation Reproductive Toxicity Study (EOGRTS) - to be used for testing industrial and agrochemicals, it has been indicated that careful consideration of benefits and disadvantages should be made prior to conducting direct-dosing studies in nursing pups. Nursing pups will not be directly dosed in dietary and drinking water studies whereas in oral gavage studies this possibility exists. Besides the risk of intubation trauma and overdosing due to direct exposure and exposure via the mother's milk, direct dosing could lead to a different hazard assessment of chemicals depending on the choice of the route of administration. In addition, in case of industrial and agrochemicals used in industrial or professional settings only, there will never be direct exposure of newborns. Moreover, direct dosing of nursing pups is an artificial, non-physiological, route of exposure and as such it would hamper risk assessment. It should therefore only be considered in exceptional cases and justified on a case-by-case approach.
